Time Outs
Supervision is the first key in keeping a puppy out of trouble. But, even the best of owners can make a mistake with that. It is impossible to supervise a puppy 100% of the time. So- if you find your puppy is getting the puppy crazies- chewing your hands to hard, being rude or annoying to another pet, or just needs to be calmed down, a good time out may be needed. A good safe crate is often the best time out place. But, don't make this a punishment. A crate should be an enjoyable place for your puppy. It is a safe, secure, quite area to keep her safe.
Time out's can be tethers that are in different places of your house. A tether station is good to have in several area of the house. You can attach your puppy quickly when needed. Supervision is important when you have your puppy tethered. Screw an eyehook screw into the wall or floor and attach 3 feet of line or cable. With a clip at the end to attach your puppy collar. A quite room that is puppy proof is an option. An ex pen can work for small puppies. Keep the time outs short. Anywhere from 1 minute to 4 or 5. Tie outs should be done the instant your puppy gets into trouble; otherwise she will not associate the time out with the action causing it. Don't interact or talk to her during her time out. If she throws a fit, cries, barks or scratches, ignore her. Make sure you let her out of time out, when she has been quit for at least one minute.
